Yiu Song-Lam

oboe

  Born in Hong Kong, Yiu graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In 1987, he participated in the 1st Macau International Festival as a soloist, performing with the Goldberg Ensemble from England. In 1989 he was awarded the Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship to study at the Queensland Conservatorium, the Royal Academy of Music, London, the Rotterdam Conservatorium, Holland and the Köln Musikhochschule, Germany, where he was awarded the Diploma der Künstlerischen Abschlußprüfung with distinction in 1994. His teachers include Chan Kwok Cheung, Peter Cooper, Anthony Camden, Celia Nicklin, George Caird, Emanuel Abbühl and Christian Schneider. He has attended the classes of Ingo Goritzki, Thomas Indermühle, Lothar Koch, Hansjörg Schellenberger and Maurice Bourgue. He has performed at festivals in Japan, Canada, England, Holland, France, Spain, Germany, Italy and Salzburg in Austria.

  During his stay in Europe, he performed intensively as a chamber musician. He appeared often as a soloist and participated in composers' presentation concerts such as the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM) in 1988 and 2002. As a member of the baroque ensemble "Conjunto Hemiola", he was invited to perform at the International Summer Festival “Quincena Musical” in San Sebastián, Spain, in 1996. He has been invited to perform with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields under the baton of Sir Neville Marriner on their Hong Kong tour. Being invited by the International Double Reed Society, he has performed in New York in June, 2007 and will perform in Utah in July 2008.

  Being the most active oboe teacher and performer in Hong Kong, he has also been invited by the Xian Conservatory, the Guangzhou Conservatory, the Shanghai Conservatory and the Macau Culture Department to give oboe masterclasses and be adjudicator for various music Competitions. Between 1998 and 2003, he was the Co-Principal Oboe and Solo English Horn of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. As a founding member and chairman of Les Six and the founder and director of Hong Kong Wind Kamerata, he is also the overseas consultant of the Macau Youth Orchestra. Currently, he is the oboe lecturer and chamber music coach at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Baptist University.
